Summer hats for summer 2012

Summer is here and one of the main things every Fashionista will need this warm weather season is a hat! Hats serve many purposes during the hot weather season. First, hats can help block the sun from hitting your face. There are even hats on the market, such as the wide brimmed hats from San Diego Hat Company, which offer SPF protection. This is a fabulous feature from a hat since it not only allows you to look fashionable and fabulous, but it also protects your skin. Love that!

Hats are also a fun way to express your personal style while lounging poolside, building sandcastles on the beach or listening to your favorite band play in a wide open outdoor venue. Wide brimmed hats are also great on warm summer days while strolling outdoor shopping centers, going to the park and for any outdoor activity you can think of; except maybe marathon running

Since color is all the rage this season, hat shopping for summer 2012 is fun and playful. You can find a wide brimmed hat in any color you want. Hats are being shown in full color as well as natural color with a pop of color on the trim. This allows you many options for the summer season. Do you feel like having one bright hat? Want to add color in an understated way with only the trim reflecting a bright or pastel hue? The choice is yours!

We found a few fabulous summer hats for the summer 2012 season around the web and assembled them into the Polyvore set below. Hope you love them! Happy shopping, stay fabulous and enjoy the sun!

Fall 2012 fashion trends: get kitschy

The kitschy trend began in spring 2012 when designers such as Prada and Kate Spade showed the lighthearted and fun side of fashion. Prada created an entire collection based on inspiration from vintage cars while Kate Spade designed handbags which mimicked swimming pools and pineapples. For fall 2012, more serious designers such as Diane Von Furstenberg have joined in the kitschy trend and taken their designs to the fun side of the spectrum.

The fall 2012 runways gave us handbags shapes like dominoes, cars, fruit and every shape imaginable. In addition to obvious pictures and shapes, designers showed designs with unexpected embellishments and fun types of trim.

Although some designers, such as Dolce & Gabbana, designed serious and rich looking collection for the fall seasons, other designers had fun with their creations and created conversation pieces.

This fall, the easy way to integrate the kitschy trend into your wardrobe is with a handbag or jewelry item. Earrings such as Twisted Silver’s “Beach Earrings” are a great way to add some fun to an ensemble and show that although it is fall, summer will never end. Kitschy handbags such as Diane Von Furstenberg’s domino clutch are also a great way to add some lighthearted appeal to dressier attire and keep people talking.

We found a few kitschy items from the spring/summer collections from around the web and assembled them into the Polyvore set below. Hope you love it! Happy shopping, have tons of fun, and stay fabulous

Happy Birthday to our beloved Golden Gate!

The Golden Gate Bridge is celebrating 75 years this weekend. I remember when the bridge celebrated its' 50th anniversary and many of my friends walked across the bridge and had fabulous tales to tell about the middle of the span flattening out. The stories and photos were amazing; making the rest of us wish we had gone too.

The Golden Gate Bridge is a local icon which also served as my lifeline to San Francisco. Growing up in Marin, the city was where we played. We went to the Opera, the Ballet, the Symphony and of course Union Square.

Watching the Golden Gate celebrate 75 years also reminds me of an older San Francisco, the city I knew as a child and teenager. It reminds me of cutting through the fog as we crossed the bridge on the way into the city with my Mother for a day downtown. My Mother would tell me stories about her life growing up in San Francisco as we drove into the city over the bridge.

As I grew up, the bridge became an adventure. As a sixteen year old, it was a little scary to navigate while driving, but by the time I was ready to start my undergraduate days at the University of San Francisco, navigating the bridge had become old hat and actually fun.

It is interesting to think about all of the discussions in the Bay Area we have had throughout the years about the Golden Gate Bridge. In the 1990's, years of fatal accidents caused a discussion about installing a movable jersey barrier on the bridge. This idea eventually faded and today we still have little yellow sticks which are moved to help the flow of traffic during peak hours. There had even been talk about building a new span alongside the bridge in the 1990's in order to help the flow the traffic. Thankfully, this idea was tabled. Can you imagine a modern bridge next to the beautiful Golden Gate with traffic going in the opposite direction? Weird.

I remember when the toll was only $1, and my Mother remembers the toll being a mere twenty-five cents. As the toll started to rise over the years, I remember being in many lively discussions about how awful the rise in price was.

When FastTrak came out, it was the most amazing invention since sliced bread. We no longer had to wait in line for ten minutes with all of the tourists to pay an astronomical toll. FastTrak almost makes the $5 toll not so painful.

As an adult, the Golden Gate Bridge is a source of fun for my children anytime we cross it. They love how the fog rolls around the towers and they love the view of the ocean and the Bay Area.

Here's to the most beautiful bridge in the world. It has been a fabulous 75 years, and we are all looking forward to 75 more years of breathtaking beauty.

Happy Birthday Golden Gate!

Fall 2012 fashion trends: Shades of dark blue and navy

Neiman Marcus has declared Navy Blue the “new neutral” for the fall 2012 season. Here at Bay Area Fashionista, we could not agree more. Shades of blue, from vivid medium blue through to navy, were spotted on the runways in Milan, Paris, London and New York; and store buyers seem to have stocked their shelves with the hue for the fall season.

Blue and navy blue are considered pleasant colors and tend to look fabulous on every skin tone, and with every hair color imaginable. Blue and navy are also easy shades to match with other colors and neutral tones. Navy blue and blue are being shown on everything imaginable including shoes, handbags, clothing and jewelry. In fact, lapis jewelry has become immensely popular and is an easy way to invest in something classic which also fits perfectly into the dark blue trend for fall 2012.

The one thing to consider when shopping for blue or navy, or pulling out an accessory or garment from a previous season, is the shade of navy or blue. Try to stay away from extremely dark navy blues which are difficult to tell apart from black. The lighter shade of navy is what is hot for fall 2012. Also, make sure your garment or accessory is not obviously from the spring season. Stay away from anything with ropes or with a nautical feel for fall.

We found a few fabulous blue and navy items from around the web and assembled them into the Polyvore set below. Hope you love it! Happy shopping and stay fabulous

Colorful watches for the summer 2012 season

Since spring and summer 2012 have been all about color, it is only natural that watches would follow suit. Gone are the days of the classic stainless steel watch. Summer 2012 is all about bright colored watches and pastel watches made from ceramic or rubber watch-bands. Any Swatch memories from the 1980’s coming to mind? Oh yes, they are back!

Watches this season are being shown in every bright hue imaginable, as well as every pastel shade which appeared on the Paris runways. In addition to bright and pastel hues, white ceramic watches are immensely popular due to the neutral nature of the shade.

The ceramic watches which are hot this season are being shown in many different sizes and also feature crystal or diamond bezels. White ceramic watches may just be the standout watch for the summer 2012 season.

In addition to white ceramic, ceramic watches can be found in every color imaginable; and shades such as canary yellow and Tangerine Tango have moved into the forefront of watch fashion. Rubber watchband styles are also huge this season and can be found in every shade under the sun. Shades of green, yellow and orange seen to be the standout pieces when it comes to the rubber watch band.

We discovered that Timex has a large collection of fabulously colorful watches for the summer season all priced below $110. A few pieces from their collection are below.

Dolce & Gabbana Mint nail polish for spring and summer 2012 review

Dolce & Gabbana released their beautiful, runway inspired, "Bouquet" beauty collection for the spring and summer 2012 season. This fabulous collection of vivid colors includes several shades of nail polish which I could not pass up. Since "mint" is one of the hot colors of the season, and a shade I have not used in the past for nail polish, I decided to give the polish a whirl. Here is my review:

Dolce & Gabbana's "Bouquet Collection" mint nail polish was my first test of the designing duo's beauty products. I have always been in love with Dolce & Gabbana's apparel and accessories collection, in fact, I have purchased several of their designs over the years. So, it was only natural for me to try their line of cosmetics.

Dolce & Gabbana's mint nail polish is packaged in the designing duo's classic long nail polish bottle. The applicator brush holds a lot of polish and as I began to apply the first coat I discovered right away that the brush needs to be rubbed along the side of the bottle opening a few times before brushing the polish onto my nails. After the first coat, I realized the polish was matte and found it dried nice and quick. Love that!

After my nails were ready, I applied the second coat and it went on smoothly and evenly. There was absolutely no streaking and the color was even. The matte nature of the color was intriguing and gave the otherwise feminine mint hue a little bit of an edge; which I love!

The polish has been wearing well and is extremely chip resistent. I have washed a few dishes by hand without gloves and the polish didn't chip or crack; showing the high quality finish of Dolce & Gabbana's nail polish. Fabulous!

I am giving Dolce & Gabbana's mint nail polish from the "Bouquet Collection" five out of five stars.

Dolce & Gabbana cosmetics can be found at
Saks Fifth Avenue and also at Dolce & Gabbana boutiques. The nail polish is priced at $20.

Fall 2012 shoe trends: the smoking shoe

Fall 2012 is rolling into stores as we speak and one of the biggest and newest trends in shoes for fall is the smoking shoe. An offshoot of the continuing menswear trend, the smoking shoe is a flat shoe based on a man’s smoking slipper. The women’s version is being shown in the same silhouette and with many of the same materials as the men’s version with the exception of an outdoor sole underneath.

Smoking slippers are being shown in many fabrications for the fall season. Suede and velvet are proving to be the most common fabrications, although there are exotic, leather and fabric versions on the market to suit anyone’s taste.

The top of the smoking slipper, in general, may offer an embroidered emblem or design which adds to the richness and allure of the leisure time style. Although not dominant on the runway at all, the smoking slipper is a favorite of store buyers for the fall season and is taking store shelves by storm. The style is an interesting alternative to the delicate ballet flat and may take the place of the feminine style for the fall season as the menswear trend gains momentum this cool weather season.

Smoking slippers are a casual shoe style which can be worn mainly with jeans and pants; although more daring Fashionistas may style the smoking slipper with skirts. Since the smoking slipper is decidedly masculine, its’ natural look is with more masculine ensembles.

We found a few smoking slippers from around the web and assembled them into the Polyvore set below in order to help inspire your smoking shoe shopping for the fall season. Hope you love it!
